Towards Zero Waste in Fashion & Textiles Every second, a garbage truck’s worth of textiles is incinerated or sent to landfills - fueling pollution and disproportionately harming communities in the Global South. Today, the 2025 International Day of Zero Waste, led by UN Environment Programme and UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme), highlights the urgent need for circular solutions in fashion. ⭐️ We asked GOTS-certified brands about the strategies they use to reduce waste in their production and discovered some inspiring tactics: • Using monomaterials and biodegradable materials • Creating modular designs and zero-waste patterns • Partnering with resale platforms • Establishing take-back programs • Providing repair and maintenance services A #ZeroWaste future in fashion is possible, but it requires systemic change: 🔹 Consumers extending the life of textiles through reuse, repair, and conscious purchasing. 🔹 Brands committing to circular business models, responsible sourcing, and durable design. 🔹 Policies, like the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), holding businesses accountable. 👉 Between regulation and consumer action where are you seeing impact? 👉 Have you seen any brands implement successful strategies to reduce waste? Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS)
Non-profit Organizations
GOTS is the world’s leading textile processing standard for organic fibres, including social & ecological criteria.
About us
The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the worldwide leading textile processing standard for organic fibres, including ecological and social criteria, backed up by independent certification for the entire textile supply chain. GOTS covers the entire post-harvest processing (including spinning, knitting, weaving, dyeing and manufacturing) of apparel and home textiles made with certified organic fibre (such as organic cotton and organic wool), and includes both environmental and social criteria. Key provisions include a ban on the use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs), highly hazardous chemicals (such as azo dyes and formaldehyde), and child labour, while requiring strong social compliance management systems and strict waste-water treatment practices. GOTS was developed by leading international standard setters - Organic Trade Association (U.S.), Japan Organic Cotton Association, International Association Natural Textile Industry (Germany), and Soil Association (UK) to define globally-recognised requirements that ensure the organic status of textiles, from field to finished product. GOTS is a non-profit organisation which is self-financed. For more information please visit our website: www.global.standard.org.

GOTS Joins Make the Label Count! At Global Standard, we believe that sustainability claims need to be credible, transparent and fair – for both businesses and consumers. That is why we have joined Make the Label Count, a coalition advocating for accurate environmental impact assessments in the EU. With over 15,000 GOTS-certified facilities worldwide, we see first-hand that both brands and consumers want real sustainability and to reject greenwashing. By contributing our expertise in organic textiles, due diligence and independent certification, Global Standard is ensuring that every part of the textile value chain is heard. What’s at stake? The Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) methodology, which could shape the future of sustainability claims in fashion. But without key revisions -- such as including microplastics and plastic waste – PEF risks legitimizing unsustainable consumption. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/dD7mYqHU Let’s make sure sustainability labels truly count. • • • • #BehindTheSeams #makethelabelcount #EU #SustainableFashion #NoGreenwashing #SayYesToGOTS #FromFieldToFashion #OrganicTextiles #Eco #Fair
